Deep soil organic carbon (SOC) responds differently to global change compared to surface SOC due to weaker biotic controls and stronger mineral influences at depth. This review highlights the need for more research on deep SOC, as current data are limited and often speculative. Incorporating deep soils into studies and models is essential for accurate climate projections and nature-based solutions.
