Microbiome engineering can be hindered when bacterial inoculants inadvertently support native microbiomes. Soil experiments revealed that Pseudomona's inoculants failed to thrive due to nutrient competition and facilitation of resident bacteria. Selective nutrient niches can help maintain inoculant competitiveness and effectiveness.
