Net-zero approaches must consider Earth system impacts to achieve climate goals

Commitments  to net-zero CO2 or GHG emissions now cover 88% of global emissions. However,  CO2 emissions and removals may not have equivalent climate impacts due to  factors like impermanence and non-CO2 effects. These non-equivalencies should  be considered to meet climate goals, making emission reductions more critical  than relying solely on removals.
